GroupSave is an existing National Rail discount that gives 3–9 people travelling together on the same service 1/3 off the off-peak fare. It's already built into the ticketing system - ShareTrain is simply the tool that lets solo travellers access it by matching them with others on the same train.
Railcards cost £30–35 upfront, exclude large portions of the population by age or relationship status, and only pay for themselves if you travel frequently enough. ShareTrain has no eligibility requirements, and works for anyone on any qualifying journey — the first time you use it, you're already in profit.

More importantly, GroupSave gives the exact same 1/3 discount as most railcards — but unlike a Two Together or 16-25 card, you don't need to be in a pre-existing group. You don't need to know anyone. You just need to be on the same train as two other people — and that's what ShareTrain arranges for you.

Railcards reward people who already travel in groups or who are the right age. ShareTrain rewards everyone else — the commuter travelling alone, the professional on a work trip, the student who aged out of their railcard. If you've ever sat on a train paying full price while three people next to you got a third off, ShareTrain is the fix for that.
ShareTrain will charge a small finder's fee - less than a pound per journey - that still leaves your final ticket price far cheaper than before. Unlike railcard, you will not be required to pay a subscription fee.
